Key 8

Key 8 is the latest in the Key Series devised By Marion Stanton. They are aimed at the AAC user who has fairly good cognitive skills but difficulty with access. Key 8 is an improvement on Key 6 as there is more flexibility to have command buttons in addition to vocabulary buttons on each page without making the individual cells much smaller. The focus is on spelling but there is an efficient word prediction system and there are pages for symbol based communication which can be further developed really easily using the auto content feature. Key 8 is designed for AAC users who are fairly literate. However, there is a good word prediction built in and there are pages for symbol based communication which can be further developed using the auto content function. The idea of Key 8 is that the person who has a lot to say but limited movement can access a vocabulary with some ease. The AAC user selects an alphabet page and the letters of the alphabet will appear in bunches of 6. They then select the bunch with their chosen letter in. This will go to a page with the 6 letters on it. Selecting the desired letter will then give you a choice of the 6 most commonly used words from the history of your typing as well as from a data base within GRID2. If what you want isn't there you have to select the alphabet cell and put in the second letter of your word and so on until it either appears in the word prediction of until you have "taught" Key 8 your word. If you want to type that word a second time it will normally appear the first time you get to word prediction. You can also use key 8 for work by selecting the "word processing" option. On this option the words you type will not be spoken out loud and they can be saved as Rich Text Format word documents which can be handy for teacher's wanting to share files with parents, other teachers, teaching assistants or therapists. The "choices" option will take you to pages that have been made for symbol users or for those who want to supplement their typing with whole phrases for speed. You can easily add pages and add to existing pages in this section so that Key 8 becomes personalised for the person who is using it.
