Ladder Activities
This is a set of activities that are graded in difficulty through 12 steps with a variety of grid designs to assess for best access requirements. Originally designed for assessing the access needs of students on Motor Planning Training programmes this is also a useful resource for classroom assessment.
Ladder Activities are a set of activities that go from basic single point requirements up to typing of paragraphs. Originally the concept of the Ladder was not for assessing ability but for assessing access needs. On the lower steps it is ideal if you are asking questions where you know that the student knows the answer (we call this "shared knowledge"). If the student selects an incorrect answer you then know that it is the access which is wrong and not the student's understanding. The idea then is to change the layout of the grid or the support given to the student until they are able to select the answer you both know to be correct. As long as you are confident that the layout of the pages and the way the studen is accessing them is the right one for them you can use the steps of the ladder as an assessment and teaching tool by working through the steps until you reach a point where the student is finding the questions difficult. This will indicate the teaching point. Some of the general knowledge questions might need changing or adapting to suit the curriculum that your particular student has studied.
